Our Story

Renting is a Relationship

When we created TenantMarket, we started with a simple question: how is the experience of renting a home more like finding a job than buying a used car?

The answer we found was obvious with some not-so-obvious implications. Renting involves a relationship between landlord and renter over time; both parties care about the quality and dependability of the other. Buying a used car is a one-time transaction. Renting is a relationship.

And yet when we looked at the options available to attract renters, we noticed they didn’t vary much from those used to sell used car sales: newspaper classifieds, free online classifieds, agents and brokers, Internet listing services.

One-to-many advertising channels are fine in transaction-based markets, but in our eyes, there was a huge missed opportunity for a relationship-based market. The cost to both landlord and renters is clear: according the to Census Bureau, over 50% of landlords experience at least 60 days of vacancy (nationally the rental vacancy rate is nearly 10% and as high as 15% in Atlanta, Houston, and St. Louis), and many renters find simply searching for housing is a full-time job, consuming their work hours and weekends.

One-to-One Markets Require Two-Way Conversations

TenantMarket was designed to create a two-way conversation between landlord and renter. Renters can share their interests with landlords, and landlords can contact them with offers tailored to their unique profile.

Benefits for Landlords

After talking with landlords, we discovered that TenantMarket created the first proactive solution to vacancy. Instead of posting an ad and waiting for renters to respond, TenantMarket enables landlords to directly and immediately reach out to exactly the renters who match their property. This affects landlords’ bottom-line because eliminating a single day of vacancy can save $75 for the average rental unit in the US.

Benefits for Renters

Renters who use TenantMarket benefit in multiple ways: renters save time by creating a persistent search that brings relevant information to them; offers are personalized based on the renter's profile, helping great renters find better deals.
